Hope is the only light in times of darkness. Christian Appalachians have sacrificed a great deal to let their light shine into the darkness of despair, and our goal is to magnify that light with every resource at our disposal.

Our Story

A Vision of an Appalachia Changed by Faith-Based Ministry

Ministries of Appalachia was born from two loves: a love for God and a love for the region. Having witnessed Appalachia’s hurts and hopes firsthand, we are driven by a desire to make a difference in the place we call home.

Ministries of Appalachia is a Christian, Appalachian organization at its core, and its mission is informed by a desire to bring God’s light and hope to the region’s despair. Though Appalachia’s needs are many and varied, faith-based outreach is a fundamental need of the region, and one that will affect far more people than those attending our local churches.

The Dream of a Lifetime

Reverend Anthony C. Grills has had one aim since childhood: to bring light and hope to people and places where it’s in short supply. Having grown up in Appalachia himself, Anthony witnessed his community’s struggles early and often. God’s calling into the ministry halfway into his teens altered the course of his life in ways he could never have imagined. He quickly developed a singular, all-consuming goal: to bring God to those who believed themselves outside of His reach. 

Anthony worked his way through a variety of faith-based ministries until he landed in southwest Virginia, never losing sight of his original goal. It was here that a new vision began to take shape, one that would allow him to fulfill his mission by mingling two things he loves dearly: Appalachia and helping others. Ministries of Appalachia is the brainchild of this union, the natural result of an ever-expanding dream to see the world filled with the hope that God supplies. Anthony believes strongly in our imperative to carry out Christian community development–to advance the lives of believers and unbelievers alike. To this end, he has labored tirelessly to bring both hope and sustainable progress to the region he proudly calls home.
